No power in part or all of your home?
Losing power is stressful, especially in Miami heat. Here is how to tell whether it is a utility outage or a problem inside your home, and how to get a licensed electrician out to you quickly.
Step 1: Is it just you?
Look outside. If neighbors and streetlights are also out, it is almost always a utility outage: check the FPL outage map or app and report it. An electrician cannot fix the utility side.
Step 2: Check your breaker panel
If only your home, or only some rooms, lost power, open your electrical panel. A breaker that is in the middle or "off" position has tripped. Push it fully off, then back on once. If it trips again right away, leave it off: that circuit has a fault and needs an electrician.
Also check GFCI outlets (the ones with TEST/RESET buttons) in kitchens, bathrooms, garages and outdoors. One tripped GFCI can cut power to several outlets.
When to call an electrician
- Half the house is out but the panel looks fine (this can be a problem with the main breaker, the meter connection or the service wires).
- A breaker will not reset or trips again immediately.
- Lights dim or flicker before the power goes out.
- You notice heat, buzzing or a burning smell at the panel.
How 305Electricians helps
Call (305) 699-4194 or send a quick request. We connect you with an independent, Florida-licensed electrician who serves your area. The electrician contacts you, finds the problem and tells you what it will cost before doing any work. We are a referral service: we do not do the electrical work ourselves, and the electrician sets their own price.
