Breaker keeps tripping?
A breaker trips to protect your wiring from overheating. When it happens over and over, it is telling you something is wrong.
Common causes
- Overloaded circuit: too many high-power devices on one circuit (space heaters, microwaves, hair dryers, window AC units).
- Short circuit: a hot wire touching a neutral wire, often from a damaged outlet, cord or device.
- Ground fault: current leaking to ground, common in kitchens, bathrooms, outdoors and after water gets into an outlet (frequent after Miami storms).
- A worn or failing breaker.
- AC or appliance problems: a failing compressor or motor can trip its breaker.
What you can safely check
Unplug everything on that circuit and reset the breaker once. If it holds, plug devices back in one at a time to find the one causing it. If it trips with nothing plugged in, or trips immediately, stop and call an electrician.
