Lights flickering, dimming or buzzing?
Sometimes it is just a bulb. Sometimes it is an early sign of a loose connection. Here is how to tell the difference.
Safety first: If flickering comes with a burning smell, heat at a switch or the panel, or sparks, turn off that circuit if it is safe and treat it as urgent. Fire or smoke: 911.
Usually minor
- A loose or failing bulb, especially LEDs on an old or incompatible dimmer.
- One fixture flickering while everything else is fine.
Call an electrician when
- Lights flicker in several rooms, or dim when the AC or another big appliance starts.
- Flickering keeps happening after you change the bulb.
- Switches or outlets feel warm or buzz.
- Neighbors have the same problem (also report it to FPL: it may be on the utility side).
